U.S. Congressman Silas Mainville Burroughs of New York's 31st District died at his home in Medina, New York five weeks before his fiftieth birthday. A Republican, he was in his second term. Previously he had served in the New York Assembly and had been a brigadier general in the state militia. Another Republican, Edwin R. Reynolds was elected in November 1860 to complete his term.
