Lane, Joseph

Joseph Lane was born in Franklin, Pennsylvania on May 29, 1845. Lane worked as a blacksmith prior to the Civil War and enlisted for a three year term on December 25, 1863 in Chambersburg, Pennsylvania as a private in Company G of the 22nd United States Colored Troops Regiment. He was about eighteen years old at the time of his enlistment and was described as being five feet and nine inches tall with brown eyes and a coffee colored complexion. Lane was listed as “absent in arrest” in June and July 1865 and was sentenced to six months hard labor in August 1865 in Norfolk, Virginia. He passed away in 1895 and was buried in Locust Grove Cemetery in Shippensburg, Pennsylvania. (By Brenna McKelvey)
