Samuel Scott was born around 1820 in Mercer, Pennsylvania and worked as a barber prior to his service in the Civil War. He registered as a private in Company A of the 5th Massachusetts Cavalry in Mahoning, Ohio for a three-year term on July 30, 1864 at forty-four years old. Military records describe Scott as being about five feet and six inches tall with black eyes, hair, and complexion. The army organized the regiment at Camp Meigs in Readville, Massachusetts. The 5th Massachusetts participated in the initial stages of the siege at Petersburg, Virginia before moving to Point Lookout, Maryland to guard prisoners of war. The regiment returned to Richmond, Virginia on duty in April 1865 before moving on to Texas until the remaining soldiers mustered out on October 31, 1865.
