Lewis, John R.

John R. Lewis was born in Montgomery, Pennsylvania around 1843 and served in the United States Colored Troops during the Civil War. According to his service records, Lewis worked as a laborer before he joined Company H of the 25th USCT on February 3, 1864 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. While promoted to First Sergeant on March 23, 1864, Lewis was reduced to ranks on November 24, 1864 for “negligence of duty.” Lewis was mustered out on December 6, 1865 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
