PENOBSCOT COUNTY, situated in the central part of Maine, and traversed by Penobscot river. Area, 3,282 square miles. Face of the country, undulating and hilly; soil, fertile. Seat of justice, Bangor. Pop. in 1810, 7,471; in 1820, 13,870; in 1840, 45,705; in 1850, 64,089.
