BARNWELL DISTRICT, situated in the southwest part of South Carolina, between Edisto and Savannah rivers. Length, 50 miles; mean breadth, 35; with an area of 1,680 square miles. The face of the country is hilly, and the soil of fair quality, suitable for growing cotton and grain. Courts are held at Barnwell. Pop in 1820, 14,750; in 1830, 19,236; in 1840, 21,471; in 1850, 26,608.
