JEFFERSON COUNTY, situated in the northerly part of New York, with Lake Ontario on the west, and St. Lawrence river on the northwest. Area, 1,125 square miles. Face of the country, broken, in the interior, but even toward Lake Ontario and St. Lawrence river; soil fertile. Seat of justice, Watertown. Pop. in 1810, 15,140; in 1820, 32,952; in 1830, 48,515; in 1840, 60,984; in 1850, 68,153.
