In North Carolina, Union cavalry and infantry rendezvous on the Chowan River.

Union forces planned to disrupt Confederate communications by destroying the railroad bridge at Weldon, North Carolina that carried the Wilmongton and Weldon Railroad over the Roanoke River. Three thousand infantry under Major General John G. Foster had landed the day before at Winton, North Carolina. Pennsylvania and New Jersey cavalry under Colonel Samuel Spear arrived this following day.  The mission disrupted supply lines but was driven off from Weldon the following day at the Battle of Jackson.  (By John Osborne)
