April 28th 1864
Dear Sir
As your time is precious, I will tax your attention but a moment,
Nearly Three eventful years have past since you walked with me to the War Dept and handed me a Commission to go and serve my Country, and gave me some messages to deliver to Genl B F Kelly, and while I have tried to prove faithful to the trust commited to me, I have observed your carier with intrest & satisfaction, But no act of your life, or letter from your pen, has afforded me more satisfaction, than your letter of the 4th April to A G Hodges Esq of Frankfort,
I congratulate you on the sound logic, and correct sentiment enunciated in said letter, and believe it will meet the approbation of every loyal, at least of every christian heart throughout the land,
May a kind providence spare your life and health to see our glorious banner again wave in triumph over every foot of american soil

The Rebels under the Rebel Generals Forrest Buford & Thompson tried hard to take us on severel occasions of late but we have a brave commander Col. Hicks whom they can never take alive -- we need a cavalry force here to drive them out of the Country
