In Boston, Rebecca Davis Lee graduates as the first female African-American medical doctor

Delaware born, but Philadelphia raised Rebecca Davis Lee became the first African American woman with a medical degree when she graduated from the four year course at the New England Female Medical College in Boston, Massachusetts. She had previously practiced as a nurse in Charlestown, Massachusetts.  Following the Civil War she married Dr. Arthur Crumpler and practiced in Richmond before returning to Boston.  She practiced until around 1883 and died in 1895.
