At noon on a bright spring day in Washington, D.C., around six hundred dignitaries gathered in the East Room of the White House for the funeral service of Abraham Lincoln. Following the sermon from Reverend P.D. Gurley of the New York Avenue Presbyterian Chuch, the president's remains were conveyed in a hearse drawn by six white horses to the Capitol rotunda where the coffin remained in state until Friday morning.
