A morning collision between two crowded passenger trains on the Long Island Railroad between Winfield and Jamaica just outside New York City killed five people and injured up to twenty-five others. One train was a special and confusion over schedules was blamed on the crash. The two locomotives, both new and named "General Grant" and "General Sherman," met head on at some speed.
