Seeking to emulate the popular "Saengerfests" of German-speaking choirs, the German-American shooting club in Baltimore, Maryland invited other such clubs around the country to a "German Target Festival" in the city. The "Schutzen Fest" was an unexpected success, drawing crowds of up to 60,000 people during the three days. A reported 5000 shots were fired, celebrations held, and prizes won and awarded.
