General U.S. Grant, visiting New York, was examining a prototype of a new rifle design in the Metropolitan Hotel when the weapon discharged and slightly injured his hand. Grant's four children were present, along with his aides, but no-one else was hurt in the incident. His wound was dressed on the spot and did not interrupt his scheduled arrangements for the rest of the day. (By John Osborne)
