Crowds gathered on the banks of the Connecticut River near Springfield, Massachusetts to see a quadruple skulls contest between an American team made up of the Ward Brothers and a Canadian crew from St. John, New Brunswick. At the four p.m. start, the home crew took an early lead and maintained it throughout the race, finishing the course in thirty-nine minutes and twenty-eight seconds, almost two minutes ahead of their rivals.
