ESSEX COUNTY, situated in the northeasterly part of New York, on the westerly side of Lake Champlain. Area, 1,779 square miles. Face of the country hilly and mountainous; soil generally sterile. Seat of justice, Elizabethtown. Pop. in 1810, 9,477; in 1820, 12,811; in 1830, 19,387; in 1840, 23,634; in 1850, 30,993. (Fanning's, 1853)
