Baltimore rioters mount a deadly attack on the Sixth Massachusetts in the streets of the city

The Sixth Massachusetts Regiment left Philadelphia in the morning for Washington DC and, while crossing Baltimore between railroad depots, were attacked by southern sympathizing rioters.  They reached their train to the capital but not before they had suffered three killed, others wounded, and had opened fire in response, killing thirteen rioters.  Pennsylvania troops, however, were forced to return to Philadelphia.  (By John Osborne)

The Sixth Massachusetts Regiment arrives in Philadelphia on its way to Washington DC, via Baltimore

The Sixth Massachusetts Regiment arrived by steam ferry from New Jersey at the wharf at the bottom of Walnut Street in Philadelphia.  Massive crowds cheered as they marched up Chesnut Street to their overnight quarters at the Girard Hotel.  They entrained the next day for Washington, DC and while changing trains in Baltimore were the main victims of the attacks in the streets of that city by southern sympathizers.  (By John Osborne)

In Philadelphia, Mayor Alexander proclaims both against treason and popular disorder in the city

Mayor Alexander of Philadelphia made an official proclamation ordering that "all good citizens ... disclose and make known to the lawful authorities every person rendering in this city aid to enemies in open war against this State and the United States..."  At the same time, he also banned "assembling in the highways of the city unlawfully, riotously, or tumultuously."  The city had seen several violent demonstrations against people and businesses suspected of southern sympathies.  (By John Osborne)

In Philadelphia, angry crowds threaten the offices of the city's southern-based newspaper

A large and angry crowd gathered on Chestnut Street outside the offices of The Palmetto Flag, a southern newspaper published in the city by Town and Company.  Mayor Alexander Henry made a personal appearance from one of the windows of the building and this, along with a pledge from the owners to suspend publication, was enough eventually to avert a violent incident. (By John Osborne)
