In Ireland, a Dublin omnibus crashes into the Grand Canal and six passengers drown

A horse-drawn public omnibus was traveling at around nine in the evening towards the city center in Dublin with three male, two females, and a small child as passengers.  Crossing the Portobello Bridge over the Grand Canal, the horses became disturbed and backed the omnibus up through a barrier into a water-filled lock on the Canal.  The driver was dragged to safety but all the passengers and the horses were drowned. In London, Oxford wins the eighteenth annual Oxford and Cambridge boat race

In London, on the River Thames between the now-traditional course between the Putney and Mortlake bridges, the eighteenth annual Oxford and Cambridge boat race was rowed.  In the eighteenth meeting between the two, the Oxford crew cut an early deficit, took the lead, and won by 200 yards in a time of twenty-three minutes and thirty seconds.  Cambridge still led the series so far in 1861 with ten wins to eight.  (By John Osborne)
