This British cartoon portrays Giuseppe Garibaldi as a modern day Perseus rescuing Andromeda by slaying the sea monster who had imprisoned her. Garibaldi's remarkable invasion of Sicily the previous month had expelled the royal forces of the Bourbon King Francis II of Naples, here represented as "Bomba Junior" after the infamous penchant for Bourbon rulers in Italy to shell their own subjects. In Charleston, South Carolina, the Democratic National Convention votes to adjourn and meet in Baltimore
The Democratic National Convention meeting in Charleston, South Carolina, took up a motion to adjourn and reassemble in Baltimore on June 18, 1860. Debate to this point had been heated and the fact that fever had broken out in the city made up the minds of many. Delegates offered Philadelphia or New York as alternatives but the vote was 198 to 41 to adjourn and reassemble in Maryland. The convention broke up soon after. (By John Osborne)

The Virginia Republican State Convention meets in Wheeling, Virginia
The Virginia State Republican Convention was held in Wheeling. Around three hundred delegates attended from around the state. Delegates were chosen for Chicago and proposals were passed favoring tariffs, the Homestead Bill, and the colonization of African-Americans. Francis Preston Blair, Jr. of St. Louis spoke to a large crowd in the evening. (By John Osborne)

In New Haven, William A. Buckingham inaugurated for his third term as Governor of Connecticut
In New Haven, William Alfred Buckingham was inaugurated for a third term as Governor of Connecticut. Three weeks before, he had beaten his Democratic challenger, Thomas Hart Seymour by only five hundred votes. Abraham Lincoln had stumped for Buckingham in April and the two had struck up a friendship that stood both in good stead in coming years while Buckingham served as Connecticut's famous "war governor." The Opposition Party of the state of Delaware met in Dover to select delegates for the Republican Convention in Chicago. The meeting also pronounced itself for the Union, against the extension of slavery into the territories, and for the Homestead Bill. (By John Osborne)

A meteor shower falls to earth over Muskingum County, Ohio
Between noon and one o'clock on an unseasonably cold and overcast day in Muskingum County, Ohio, a large meteor shower was seen and heard. Large explosions were heard and a shower of dark objects was seen to fall to the ground. Several meteorites were dug still too hot to hold from surrounding fields where they had buried themselves twenty inches deep. One of those recovered weighed more than fifty pounds, another forty-two. (By John Osborne)

Opposition Party holds on to power in the Philadelphia municipal elections
In the Philadelphia Municipal elections, the Opposition candidate for mayor, Alexander Henry won a narrow victory over his Democratic challenger. The rest of the ticket was similarly successful for other city offices. The Democrats did gain in the Select Council and Common Council election but did not take control of either body.
