JEFFERSON PARISH, situated in the southeasterly part of Louisiana, traversed by the Mississippi, and bounded by bayous and inlets of the gulf of Mexico. Area, 720 square miles. Face of the country low and level; soil generally unproductive. Seat of justice, La Fayette. Pop. in 1830, 6,846; in 1840, 10,470; in 1850, 25,091.

IBERVILLE PARISH, situated toward the southeastern part of Louisiana, and traversed by Mississippi river. Area, 350 square miles. Face of the country flat; soil rich, but generally subject to inundation. Seat of justice, Plaquemine. Pop. in 1810, 2,679; in 1820, 4,414; in 1830, 7,049; in 1840, 8,495; in 1850, 12,216.

Last gap closed in a continuous rail line from Maine to New Orleans

The last gap in the continuous railroad from Bangor, Maine to New Orleans, Louisiana was closed with the laying of rail near Chattanoogo, in Tennessee.  Aside from four ferry crossings en route, passengers were then able to travel the entire route of 1,996 miles over the tracks of eighteen independent rail companies in around eighty hours.  (By John Osborne)

Aaron Stevens found guilty in Virginia for his part in Harpers Ferry Raid

Aaron Dwight Stevens, one of the last two of John Brown's men tried for their role in the Harpers Ferry Raid, was found guilty on all counts in a court in Charlestown, Virginia.  The jury took fifteen minutes to render their verdict.  Stevens and his fellow raider Albert Hazlett were hanged together in Charlestown on March 16, 1860.  (By John Osborne)
