Treaty negotiations successfully conclude the late war between France, Austria, and Piedmont

The series of treaties between the belligerents of the war earlier in the year involving France, Austria, and Piedmont-Sardinia were concluded at Zurich in Switzerland.  The treaties would be signed later in the month.  (By John Osborne)

Fire destroys a large section of New Orleans' thriving Fourth District

Late in the evening, a massive fire broke out broke out in the Fourth District of New Orleans, Louisiana and spread swiftly among the commercial buildings and fine residences there.  Within hours, a five block area was burning.  A stiff breeze was blowing and destruction in the blocks involved was almost total. The cost of the fire was estimated at $300,000 dollars but no lives were lost.  (By John Osborne).

Train derailment in Wisconsin kills ten people and injures many more

A thirteen car excursion train of the Chicago and Northwestern Railroad carrying passengers from Fond Du Lac, Wisconsin to Chicago, Illinois derailed when the locomotive reportedly hit an ox on the track near Johnson's Creek, about eight miles south of  Watertown, Wisconsin.  Ten people on the crowded train were killed and dozens others injured.  (By John Osborne)

All-England Cricket team wind up their United States tour with a victory in Rochester, New York

In their final exhibition before returning to Montreal and home to England, the touring All_England cricket team were again easily victorious, defeating an American team made of the best of the clubs in Rochester, New York.  Approximately one thousand New Yorkers watched the match in breezy and cold fall weather.  (By John Osborne)

Explosion at the Du Pont Powder Mills in Delaware kills seven

At the Du Pont Powder Works on the banks of the Brandywine River near Wilmington suffered heavy damage when a series of explosions demolished several buildings and killed seven men instantly.  A horse drawn wagon was being loaded to transfer powder between processes just before eleven in the morning when the first explosion took place without warning.
