In Philadelphia, rain cuts short the Atlantic-Athletics baseball series decider with the visitors leading.

The nation's two most prominent baseball clubs, the Philadelphia Athletics and the Brooklyn Atlantic, had agreed to an October series.  The first game in Philadelphia had to be abandoned when 40,000 people showed up but the next match in the series, at the Capitoline Grounds in Brooklyn, saw the visitors win 27-17.  The series concluded with this third game in Philadelphia with the Atlantics leading 31-27 before rain intervened in the eighth inning. Crowding and spectator disturbances at the Philadelphia Athletics end with the game being called.

The nation's two most prominent baseball clubs, the Philadelphia Athletics and the Brooklyn Atlantic, had agreed to an October series.  The first match-up was scheduled for Philadelphia but trouble was on the cards when an expected 8,000 spectators swelled to an estimated high of 40,000. Disturbances led to police action and the game was called in its first inning.  Score-cards were distributed at the ground, perhaps the first time in baseball history.  The series continued two weeks later in Brooklyn. In the small hours, fire damages the town of Colón/Aspinwall in Panama.

In the early morning hours, a fire broke out in the eastern section of the Panamanian town of Colón, then known to foreigners as Aspinwall, the eastern terminus of the railway running across the ithmus to the Pacific Ocean.  Sailors from the U.S.S. De Soto were able to bring the fire under control during the day and keep the blaze from spreading to the docks and other transport facilities.  Damage was heavy but no serious injuries were reported.  (By John Osborne)
