For the second time in two days, a steamship rescues the crew of a sinking vessel off South Carolina.

The day before, the steamship George Cromwell had rescued forty-three people from the sinking of the Daniel Webster, off the South Carolina coast in hurricane scale weather.  Now, her crew rescued the five people aboard the Baltimore schooner Minnehaha, bound from Savannah, Georgia to Richmond, Virginia which had also been caught in the storm and was sinking. In an Atlantic hurricane, a passing ship rescues all the passengers and crew of a foundering vessel.

The steamship Daniel Webster had left New York City bound for Mobile, Alabama on her regular run the week before with twenty-five crew and eighteen passengers.  She encountered gales and then a hurricane and after several days of battering began to sink.  Happily for all aboard, she happened on the steamship George Cromwell whose crew bravely took off the people aboard the stricken vessel before she sank and no lives were lost.  (By John Osborne)

In New York City, St. Patrick's Old Cathedral, the oldest Catholic church in the city, is destroyed by fire.

Sparks from another fire on Broadway started a blaze on the roof of Saint Patrick's Cathedral, known as the "Old Cathedral," on Mulberry Street and the structure was quickly and completely gutted, though many of the vestments and sacred vessels were saved. The burial vaults were untouched, however, and Saint Patrick's, the oldest Roman Catholic Church in New York City, was rebuilt and reopened in 1868.  (By John Osborne)

In Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, veterans supporting Republican policies meet in convention.

Weeks after the Democratic-supporting veterans had met in Cleveland, Ohio, Republican aligned groups met in their convention in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. General Jacob Cox of Ohio was selected as chairman and other distinguished veterans spoke.  Resolutions were passed outlining their complete support for Republican policies, pointing out that only Congress had the right to determine who and how states would be restored to representation in Washington DC.  (By John Osborne)
