Spanish naval units arrive off Callao, Peru and warn the port will be bombarded in four days time.

In the continuing hostilities between Spain and the Peruvian-Chilean alliance, Spanish naval units arrived off the Peruvian port of Callao and warned non-combattants that the city would be bombarded in four days time.  This attack indeed took place on schedule. Attacking ships and defending Chilean batteries ashore exchanged fire with damage and casualties on both sides. (By John Osborne)

Spanish naval units bombard the Peruvian port of Callao

In the continuing hostilities between Spain and the Peruvian-Chilean alliance, Spanish naval units began at noon a bombardment of the Peruvian port of Callao.  Defending batteries ashore were damaged and the Peruvian War Minister, Jose Galvez, killed but also replied with heavy fire against the Spanish, disabling the Spanish flagship and wounding their admiral before the bombardment ended around five in the afternoon.  (By John Osborne)
