In New York, newlyweds celebrate with a two hour balloon flight from Central Park to Mount Vernon

A crowd of thousands gathered near Professor T.S. Lowe's balloon United States in Central Park expecting a wedding ceremony carried out in the skies over New York.  They were disappointed to be told that the actual nuptials between Professor John F. Boynton and Mary West Jenkins had taken place earlier at a the Fifth Avenue Hotel and that the two hour flight was merely a celebration.  The crowd cheered anyway.  (By John Osborne)

At a southern England naval base, American inventors demonstrate their "torpedoes" to the Royal Navy

In a climax to a series of experiments with American naval mines for the benefit of Royal Navy observers in the River Medway outside the great English naval base at Chatham, American engineers carried out the controlled destruction of the veteran wooden 18 gun frigate H.M.S. Terpsichore.  Two 75 pound "torpedoes" detonated by electrical current, caused severe damage to the target vessel which sank but was salvaged for examination.  (By John Osborne)

At the Union Grounds in Brooklyn, the Atlantic baseball club defeats the Eckford Club 35-8

Two of the best known New York area baseball clubs met in Brooklyn for an important match.  At the former skating rink off of Marcy Avenue, known as the Union Grounds, The Atlantics defeated the Eckford club 35-8.  (By John Osborne)
