First baseball game under the new code is played in Hoboken, New Jersey

The Knickerbocker Club of New York played the New York Baseball Club, under the new code adopted the previous year, at the Elysian Fields in Hoboken, New Jersey. Traveller's Insurance Company chartered in Hartford, Connecticut

The first accident insurance company in the United States was chartered in Hartford, Connecticut. James Goodwin Batterson's "Traveller's Insurance Company" insured only against travel accidents until 1864 when the company expanded its coverage to all accidents. (By John Osborne)
