A massive afternoon summer thunderstorm hits Hartford, Connecticut

A massive thunderstorm hit Hartford, Connecticut at around five in the afternoon, dumping an estimated three inches of rain on the city in three quarters of an hour.  Streets were awash in minutes and several lightening strikes were recorded.  Cellars were flooded but the damage was not extensive, however, and no serious injuries were reported.  (By John Osborne)

President Johnson orders the surviving Lincoln conspirators to serve their sentences off the coast of Florida

The four convicted Lincoln conspirators not sentenced to death had originally been slated to serve their sentences at a penitentiary in Albany, New York.  By executive order, President Johnson amended his previous instructions, directing that Samuel Arnold, Samuel A. Mudd, Edman Spangler, and Michael O'Laughlin serve their sentences at hard labor at Fort Jefferson, a remote and desolate military prison on Garden Key in the Dry Tortugas off the coast of Florida.  (By John Osborne)
