The "Don Pacifico" conflict between Great Britain and Greece erupts over riot damage in Athens

Eager to show its defense of British commercial interests around the globe, Great Britain demanded that the Greek government pay David Pacifico, a Jewish merchant and British citizen, for property destroyed by an anti-Semitic mob in Athens.  When Greece refused, Prime Minister Lord Palermston sent the British navy to seize Greek ships, sparking a short-lived international crisis known as the "Don Pacifico Affair."
