Danish government plans a ten-year abolition in the Danish West Indies but local slaves demand immediate freedom

Reacting to news that the Danish government would abolish slavery in the Danish West Indies (today the U.S. Virgin Islands) by 1859, local slaves took to the streets to demand immediate abolition, which colonial governor Peter von Scholten granted the following day. (By Brian Bockelman)
