In Canada, heavy spring flooding inundate portions of Montreal

The melting ice on the St. Lawrence River caused heavy flooding in Montreal, threatening bridges with ice barriers and making much of the western part of the Canadian city impassable. Several railway lines were underwater, also.  The floods moderated after a day and the very damp city slowly returned to normal.  (By John Osborne)

In Morris, Illinois, a large fire burns seven buildings to the ground but no serious injuries are reported

A large section of the small town of Morris, Illinois was burned to the ground when seven wooden buildings, most selling agricultural tools, caught fire.  No serious injuries were reported and the damage was estimated at around $7000. (By John Osborne)

For Christian religious reasons, President Johnson adjusts the day of mourning for Abraham Lincoln to June 1, 1865

The previous week, newly sworn-in President Andrew Johnson had proclaimed Thursday, May 25, 1865 as a day of public mourning for the loss of President Abraham Lincoln.  When several Christian leaders pointed out to the government that the original day chosen clashed with commemorations of the ascension of Jesus into heaven, Johnson issued a new proclamation designating June 1, 1865 as the day set aside for "special humiliation and prayer in consequence of the assassination...". President Johnson sets May 25th as a day of "special humiliation and prayer" for Abraham Lincoln

Newly sworn-in President Andrew Johnson appointed by proclamation the coming Thursday, May 25, 1865 as a day of public mourning for the loss of President Abraham Lincoln.  Five days later, a new proclamation was issued changing the date to June 1, 1865, since several Christian leaders had pointed out to the government that the original day chosen clashed with commemorations of the ascension of Jesus into heaven.
