Under artillery cover, a 10,000 man Union force commanded by General Joseph Hooker attacked the four Confederate brigades under General Carter L. Stevenson holding the strongpoint above Chattanooga, Tennessee known as Lookout Mountain. After fighting that incurred surprisingly light casualties - just 400 Union men and around 1200 Confederates killed, wounded, or captured - the Confederate troops made a fighting retreat from the fog shrouded mountain as night fell. Baltimore born and a West Point graduate, Confederate Brigadier General Lewis Henry Little had risen to become General Sterling Price's most dependable officer. During the late afternoon fighting at the Battle of Iuka in Mississippi, Little was at Price's side when he was hit with a single bullet that pierced his eye.  He died instantly. His body was recovered, carried away in the Confederate retreat, and eventually buried in Green Mount Cemetery in his home city.  (By John Osborne)
