    INSANITY OF GERRIT SMITH - The telegraph announces that GERRIT SMITH, the abolition chief of New York, who was so clearly inculpated in the design of the Harper's Ferry raid, has been placed in the Utica Insane Asylum. No clearer illustration of the old Latin proverb, "Whom the Gods wish to destroy, they first make mad," has occurred for many years.
