Smithers, Enoch Joyce

Enoch Smithers attended Dickinson College with the Class of 1849 but left to study law in Delaware, his native state. He served in the Union army and later became a leading U.S. diplomat throughout postings in East Asia. He died in Japan in 1895 while serving as U.S. consul.
