Senator Thomas Hart Benton, "Old Bullion," dies of cancer in Washington, D.C.
Thomas Hart Benton, who had become the first Senator from Missouri in 1820 and had served in the Senate from then until 1850, dies of cancer in Washington D.C. One of the most influential statesmen of his time, he passes away the day after he had finished his sixteen-volume Abridgment of the Debates in Congress. He will be buried in St. Louis, Missouri.
