J. W. Richardson rides into St. Joseph, Missouri ending the first west to east run of the Pony Express

Johnson William Richardson, the last in a long line of riders in the first run of the Pony Express west to east, rode up to the Pattee House in St. Joseph, Missouri at around five o'clock in the evening.  Carrying 85 letters from San Francisco and others picked up along the way, the Express had reached its destination within the planned ten days.  Many of the letters were dispatched by regular mail to New York that evening and arrived there four days later.
