The Battle of the Wilderness opens on ground fought over the year before at Chancellorsville

New Union General in Chief Ulysses Grant began his campaign against Lee's Army of Northern Virginia the day before when he crossed the Rapidan.  Lee surprised him by attacking his advance immediately in an area of forest and shrub in Spotsylvania County.  CSA units under Ewell and Hill engaged in furious fighting with the advancing Union Corps of Warren and Sedgewick all day before holding their lines for the night.  (By John Osborne)
