Chautauque County, NY

CHAUTAUQUE COUNTY, situated in the extreme southwest corner of New York, with Lake Eric on the northwest, and also contains Chautauque lake. Area, 1,017 square miles. Face of the country rocky and hilly, with a very productive soil. Seat of justice, Mayville. Pop. in 1820, 12,568; in 1830, 34,057; in 1840, 47,975; in 1850, 50,493. (Fanning's, 1853)
