James Buchanan's fiancée dies

Ann Coleman, James Buchanan's fiancée until a few days before, dies in Philadelphia. He had began courting her in 1818 and a year later, in July, 1819, they had been betrothed. However, she broke off this engagement in early December and then died less than a week later on December 9, 1819. Buchanan will remain single for the rest of his life. (By Joanne Williams)
