A SLAVE STATE ON THE PACIFIC. – The Washington States regards with hope, as promising the possible acquisition of another slave State, the proposition to divide California. It professes to regard the region in question as offering “an inviting field to the profitable employment of Slave labor,” and desires to be informed “whether the Black Republicans intend to forbid the introduction of another Slave State.”

Leaving the Republicans to answer for themselves, we can yet tell the States that the free population of the North will save that journal and its slaveholding friends all trouble in the [promises?]. California may lay off her six southern counties as soon as she pleases, and from any motive which may seem to her good.

But when a government comes to be formed, either State or Territorial, the free population will predominate so largely, that neither Congress nor the “Black Republicans” can have occasion to decide the question propounded by the States. Our people will go in peaceably and possess the land. We imagine the States knows of no way to stop them. They will outnumber and out-vote the Slave-State party five to one. This may seem a sad state of things to our Southern brethren, but it is strictly constitutional.
