Catholic Bishop of Philadelphia dies on the street of a stroke aged forty-eight

John Nepomucene Neumann was born in  Prachatice in Bohemia on March 28, 1811.  He studied at the University of Prague, arrived in the United States in 1836 and was ordained a priest.  In 1853 he became Bishop of Philadelphia and became famous for his piety and development of parochial schools in the face of Know Nothing agitation.  He was canonized by Pope Paul VI in June 1977, the first male American to become a saint.  (By John Osborne)
