Bronson, James Howard

James Howard Bronson was born in Trumbull County, Ohio and served in the United States Colored Troops during the Civil War. According to his service records, Bronson was a barber before the war. On Independence Day in 1863 Bronson joined the 127th Ohio Volunteer Infantry, which later became the 5th USCT Regiment. While Bronson was promoted to 1st Sergeant on August 22, 1863, he requested a demotion to private in November 1864 so that he could join the 5th USCT’s band. Bronson remained in the band until he was discharged on September 20, 1865 while in Carolina City, North Carolina. Bronson died in April 1884 and was buried in Chartiers Cemetery in Carnegie, Pennsylvania. (By Don Sailer)
