Steele, Oliver O.

Oliver O. Steele was born in Jefferson County, Pennsylvania in 1841 and served in the 55th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry. A former barber, Steele enlisted when he was 22 years old on May 30, 1863 in Readville, Massachusetts. While serving in Company F, he was promoted to corporal on March 24, 1864. Later that year, Steele was hospitalized on August 30 in Beaufort, South Carolina and demoted to private. He returned to action on March 15, 1865 and was mustered out of service in Charleston, South Carolina. While the date of his death is uncertain, Steele was buried at Allegheny Cemetery in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. (By Jake Rainwater)
