Former congressman Alexander H. Stephens spoke at a large rally for Stephen Douglas at the City Hall Park in Augusta, Georgia in support for Stephen Douglas. A former Whig now a Democrat, Stephens was then one of the most vocal supporters of moderation in the South. In Augusta, he strongly supported the Union as the best government in human history and that "if it fails we shall never see its like again." The following year, Stephens became vice-president of the Confederacy. (By John Osborne)
