The Prince of Wales visits the tomb of George Washington at Mount Vernon

Prince Albert and President James Buchanan, along with his niece and various officials, took the U.S. Revenue cutter Harriet Lane up the Potomac to Mount Vernon, the ancestral home of George Washington.  There, the Prince toured the grounds, planted a commemorative tree, and visited the tomb of General Washington.  The party returned to the White House that evening after dinner at the British ambassador's residence.
