    Conservative Sentiments.

We take great pleasure in presenting, by way of contrast, to the violent proceedings at Princess Anne and Norfolk, under the lead of Governor WISE, the conservative Union sentiments adopted by a large meeting at Norfolk on the 31st [illegible]. We are gratified to find such a man as GEN. [illegible] ready to stand out against the rash suggestions of the agitators. We cannot believe that a majority of the people of Virginia are prepared to follow the violent counsels of those who are assuming to lead them into unnecessary trouble and difficulty.

Gov. WISE seems to forget that he is out of authority. Besides, we have no doubt Governor LETCHER and the Legislature will prove competent to manage the affairs of State, without being spurred up as the Ex-Governor seems to propose. The people, moreover, are disposed to count the cost, and see whether the remedy proposed is not worse than the evil itself.

We concur heartily in the resolutions of the Norfolk meeting and shall propose to test the sense of the people of Jefferson on them at no distant day. We have no faith in those self-constituted leaders who would “precipitate us into a revolution.”
