ARMS FOR TRAITORS. – Gov. PERRY, of Florida, improved his visit North by purchasing arms. The Savannah papers announce his arrival in his city on his return home with 1,000 Maynard rifles and 5,000 Minié muskets “for the use of the State.” It is now about time some steps should be taken in regard to this purchase of arms in the North, for the express purpose of using them for the overthrow of the Government. It is certainly a very singular state of affairs that, while we are doing everything in our power on the one hand to devise some compromise which shall appease the South, we should be furnishing arms on the other to be used against us.
It strikes us that any State which has openly repudiated the authority of the Federal Government becomes an enemy of the United States within the meaning of the Constitution: - and the same instrument defines treason to consist in “levying war against the United States, or in adhering to their enemies, giving them aid and comfort.” Our Grand Juries might very well receive some instructions from the proper authorities in regard to the law of treason.
