Mount Holly N.J. June 8th 1847
Rev. Dr. Emory.
We are informed by the papers that you have had a disgraceful riot in Carlisle_ and that “Professor McClintock was particularly conspicuous in urging the negroes to the attack” &c. &c. My interest in the college_ my respect for the Professor personally as well as my regard for the character of the church, and of the New Jersey conference in particular, all unite to induce me to enquire for the truth in the case.
I cannot of course believe that that Brother McClintock so far forgot himself as to act in the manner represented. And believing as I do that the statement, if not corrected is well Calculated to injure him_ the College, the Conference, and the church, I desire to see a counter statement put forth by the College authorities.
If it is not improper, & you have time sufficient, please furnish me with the facts in the case, so far as the Professor is concerned.
My address is as above & not Burlington at which place I am usually addressed from Carlisle
Please have my place of residence set right in your next Annual Register. It is not certain whether I shall be able to attend the Annual Meeting of the Trustees, but whether present or absent I shall rejoice in your prosperity.
Mr. Andrew K. Hay of Winslow expects to meet with you, and I trust he will by what he may see, and hear, and learn, become deeply interested in your institution. He is a gentlemen of some wealth and of equal generosity. Please have the K. put in his name in your next Annual.
I am with much respect your brother in Christ-
John S. Porter
