BROWN COUNTY, situated on the south boundary of Ohio, on the north side of Ohio river. Length, 30 miles; mean width, 17, with an area of about 470 square miles. The face of the country is hilly, and the soil generally fertile. Seat of justice, Georgetown. Pop in 1830, 17,857; in 1840, 22,715; in 1850, 27,332.

BELMONT COUNTY, situated in the east part of Ohio, on the westerly side of Ohio river. Length, 25 miles; mean breadth, 20; with an area of 500 square miles. The face of the country is hilly; the soil generally very productive. Seat of justice, St. Clairsville. Pop. in 1820 2,329; in 1830, 28,627; in 1840, 30,901; in 1850 34,600.

ATHENS COUNTY, situated in the southeast part Ohio, adjoining the Ohio and traversed by Hockhocking rivers. Length, about 40 miles; mean breadth, 23, extending over an area of about 900 square miles. The face of the country is undulating or hilly, but well wooded and watered, with an extremely fertile soil. Courts are held at Athens. ASHTABULA COUNTY, situated in the northeast part of Ohio, on Lake Erie, and watered by Grand and Ashtabula rivers. Length, 28 miles; breadth, 25, with an area of about 700 square miles. The face of the country is undulating, having a soil generally fertile, well-watered and wooded. Courts are held at Jefferson. Pop., in 1820, 7,382; in 1830, 14,584; in 1840, 23,724; in 1850, 28,766.

ALLEN COUNTY, situated in the northwestern part of Ohio, drained by the tributaries of Auglaize, St. Mary's, and Miami rivers, and the Miami canal. This county is about 24 miles square, and contains 554 square miles. The face of the country is flat, comprising a portion of a vast table-land, generally fertile and productive. Courts are held at Lima. Pop. in 1830, 578; in 1840, 9,079; in 1850, 12,109.
