The American College is established in Rome under the auspices of Pope Pius IX

After efforts spanning a decade, the American College was established in Rome, on  the Via dell' Umilta, for the purpose of training American clergy.  It opened officially on this date with twelve students attending mass and then a private audience with Pope Pius IX, who had been most influential is the college's founding.  The College remains in operation today.
