In November 1856, following Buchanan's election as president, Adèle and Douglas's marriage was solemnized by a Roman Catholic priest in what was widely reported as the social event of the season in the national capital. Their wedding trip to New York (to visit Douglas's mother) and Chicago was marked by public suppers and receptions, at which every detail of Adèle's dress and appearance was recorded in the press. "It is difficult to say," wrote one observer, "whether the genius of the husband or the beauty of the wife attracts the most homage" (Harper's Weekly, 26 Dec. 1857).
The premiere of Charles Gounod's opera Faust took place at the Theatre Lyrique in Paris. Set in five acts from the Goethe story, the performance was received with a relative indifference that belied its later world-wide popularity. The first United States production took place at the Academy of Music in New York City on November 26, 1863. (By John Osborne)
The premiere of Guiseppe Verdi's opera Masked Ball took place at the Teatro Apollo in Rome. The story of assassination and intrigue was originally set in Stockholm but Italian nervousness over political murder prompted the original premiere in Naples to be canceled and the opera's setting to be moved to seventeenth century Boston. The first New York production was on February 11, 1861. (By John Osborne)
Erastus Beadle, who soon became famous as a purveyor of sensational "dime-novels," published on this day one of his first ten-cent offerings, on etiquette. On this day, Prince Napoleon, the cousin of French Emperor Napoleon III of France, married Princess Maria Clotilde of Savoy, daughter of King Victor Emmanuel II of Peidmont-Sardinia, in Turin. Commentary at the time centered on how this union further signaled the growing alliance between France and anti-Austrian Italian sentiment for a united Italy. The couple produced three children but separated in 1870. (By John Osborne)
